The Day I Traded My “Busy Badge” for My Breakthrough
I used to believe that my worth was measured by my exhaustion. I was running a non-stop marathon of meetings, favors, and deadlines—none of which actually moved me closer to my most authentic life.
I was doing 100 things, but only 10 felt meaningful.
If you’re nodding your head right now, I want you to take a deep, cleansing breath with me.
You are not a machine, and your time is not an endless commodity.
This No-vember is different for me. I’m trading the grey skies and early nights of the Eastern-European winter for the Portuguese coast. That’s right—I am saying a huge, definitive NO to winter ❄️ and moving to Portugal, diving headfirst into the digital nomad and surfing communities, and connecting with brilliant minds at Web Summit. 🌊
This massive life pivot is the ultimate expression of our No-vember theme: Letting Go.
It’s the ultimate proof that a bold NO to what drains you is the only way to say a powerful YES to your purpose.
The 80/20 Boundary: Effort vs. Impact 📊
The 80/20 Rule states that 80% of your desired outcomes come from only 20% of your activities.
That means 80% of what you do is likely yielding minimal results and maximum drain. This is why the Pareto Principle is the sharpest tool for self-compassion. It forces us to define our Vital 20%—the high-impact, high-joy, high-alignment work—and create a fierce boundary around it.
This shift moves you from being busy to being powerful.
Your 3-Step Action Framework: Mastering the Art of Letting Go
To successfully apply the 80/20 boundary and truly reclaim your time, we must look at what we need to release.
STEP 1: The Clarity Audit – Pinpoint Your Drains 🔍
The Draining 80% is made up of the things we constantly try to hold onto, even when they’re pulling us under. For No-vember, we are committing to letting go of:
- 🌪️ Things we cannot control: Stop investing your precious mental energy in external chaos—the market, a colleague’s mood, a global event. Focus your power where it makes a difference: your actions.
- 🫂 People who don’t serve us: Those relationships that constantly take without giving, leaving you feeling smaller. Your energy is precious; protect its source.
- 🛑 Situations that don’t serve us: The committee you never wanted to join, the commitment you’ve outgrown, the unnecessary drama.
- 📝 Tasks that are unnecessary or can be delegated: This is pure 80/20 gold. Stop doing administrative filler. Delegate the doable; delete the unnecessary.
- ❌ Saying ‘yes’ when you think ‘no’: The most vital boundary of all. The moment your gut says ‘no,’ honour that whisper.
The Goal: Identify 1-3 items from this list that you are going to reduce or eliminate this week. Freedom is built one courageous release at a time.
STEP 2: The Courage to Cut – The Non-Negotiable Boundary 🚫
The fear of saying “no” is the fear of conflict or disappointing others. Your courage is required here.
Your external actions must be in congruence with your internal values. If you say “yes” externally while internally screaming “no,” you are violating your own congruence—and that’s the fastest path to burnout.
Practice makes powerful. Use these scripts for a confident, respectful, and firm delivery that requires no over-justification:
Scenario: New Project / Request
The Powerful No-vember Script: That sounds like a great project, but my focus right now is fully dedicated to [Your Vital 20% Project]. I can’t take it on, but I recommend [Colleague X].”
Scenario: Commitment for Next Week
The Powerful No-vember Script: “Thank you for the invite. I won’t be able to make it; I’m protecting that time for deep-focus work this week.”
Scenario: Not Right Now
The Powerful No-vember Script: “I need to check my calendar and priorities. Can I circle back with a firm answer by the end of the day?” (This gives you time to apply your 80/20 filter!)
You don’t need to apologize for protecting your purpose.
STEP 3: The Choice – Reclaim Your YES ✨
The time you reclaim from the draining 80% is the holy grail of No-vember. This time must be treated as sacred.
The freedom to give a genuine, authentic ‘yes’ to your career goals, your loved ones, and your rest is the ultimate reward. That is the breakthrough we are building toward.
My “NO” to winter is my “YES” to a nomadic, purpose-driven life and the inspiration of Lisbon. What will your “NO” unlock for you?
My call to you: Your life is not a vessel to be filled; it is a lamp to be lit. You cannot shine brightly if you are constantly pouring your energy into the wrong things. Use the 80/20 filter to find your light source.
If the 80/20 Principle is the sharpest knife in your toolkit, what is the first low-value commitment or draining situation you’re going to cut out this week? Share your “No-vember No” below! 👇
